THESE CONCERTS, IN MEMPHIS AND IN HAWAII, ARE A SAMPLE OF WHAT ELVIS COULD HAVE DONE IN THE 60’S
Elvis arrives in Hawaii on March 25, 1961 for a press conference, then an evening concert at the Bloch Arena in Pearl Harbor. He is there to perform a benefit concert to help finance the construction of the USS Arizona Memorial.
Hundreds of fans await his arrival at the airport. His concert will bring in around $62,000 for the monument. The event also helps publicize and raise public awareness to support the project. Col. Tom Parker publicizes the event on Hawaii radio. Fundraising efforts, for the most part, had been difficult up to that point. The rest of the necessary funds were soon raised and the monument was completed a year later.
Elvis received numerous official honors in recognition of this benefit.
The concert shows us what Elvis could have offered if he continued to perform. It is a concert where old songs are mixed with recent recordings. Elvis’ voice is magnificent and the band is the same that accompanies him on his recordings in Nashville.
This Elvis concert will be his last until 1968, when he will perform his television special. Elvis remains in Hawaii to shoot his movie, “Blue Hawaii,” for which he has already finished recording the soundtrack earlier at Radio Recorders.
