“AMERICAN DAVID” POEM BY BONO (U2)
HIS ADMIRATION AND PASSION FOR ELVIS.
Everyone knows the admiration of the singer Bono, leader of the band U2, for Elvis.
On May 13, 2009, the singer released on an English radio station, BBC Radio 4, the 14-minute poem that the Irish singer had written about Elvis, entitled “American David“, reciting it, with your own voice.

“American David” had been composed by Bono in 1994 and was published in 1995 in the U2 magazine “Propaganda”, although it was not broadcast in the voice of its author, until Bono decided to broadcast it on the radio, after having been more than a decade without coming to light.
Bono had a great unconditional admiration for Elvis. The poem is expressed in language that borders on the surreal. But it lets us glimpse that Elvis was that sum of lights and shadows; of certainties and contradictions, and for all this he is loved and admired.
He enhanced the greatness of the man and the artist. The form is perhaps not very orthodox, but it is not strange, .

Bono and his band U2 have always been huge fans of Elvis, even recording their album “Rattle and Hum” at Sun Records studios in a session where Bono proudly used the microphone that Elvis himself had once used. .
Another example of the admiration of the members of U2 is that the band’s drummer, Larry Mullen, baptized his firstborn with the name “Aaron Elvis“, the first two names of Elvis, but inverted.

Elvis turned America into a church when he sang “The Trilogy”.

Elvis had pharoah-like potential.
Elvis was made by america, so america could remake itself.
Elvis changed the center of gravity.
Elvis the public enemy.
Elvis ate America before America ate him.
Elvis had a voice that could explain the sexuality of America.
Elvis sang from the heart until the end.
Elvis, like America, started out loving, but then turned against himself.
Elvis called God every morning then left the phone off the hook.
Elvis woke up my heart.
Elvis’s body did not stop moving.
Elvis is alive, we are dead.
Elvis the charismatic.
Elvis the plastic, Elvis the elastic, with a spastic dance that could explain the energy of America.
Elvis fusion and confusion.
Elvis shaking like an electrical storm.
Elvis in Hollywood, his voice hit the ground.
Elvis the first rock and roll star with Scotty Moore, Bill black and DJ Fontana.
Elvis the Hillbilly brought rhythm to the white race, blues to pop, and rock’n’roll to wherever there’s rock’n’roll.
Elvis the pelvis, Elvis the psalmist, Elvis the genius, Elvis the generous.
Elvis forgive us.
Elvis pray for us
Elvis Aaron Presley 1935- 1977…”
Love and admiration that Bono expressed with eccentricity and in his own way, somewhat extravagantly, in a poem that leaves no one indifferent.
