THE PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM

“…remains an enduring American icon 4 decades after his death.”

Elvis Presley is among seven “distinguished individuals” to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom at a ceremony on November 16, 2018.

Yankee great Babe Ruth and Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia also posthumously received the prestigious award, “…the Nation’s highest civilian honor, which may be bestowed by the President to persons who have made special contributions meritorious to the security or national interests of the United States. To world peace, or to cultural or other important public or private endeavors,” the Office of the Press Secretary said.

“…Elvis Presley defined American culture to billions of fans around the world. Elvis melded Gospel, Country and Rhythm’n’Blues to create his own sound, selling over a billion records.” the White House said about the honor. “…Elvis also served nearly 2 years in the United States Army, humbly accepting the call to serve despite his fame.

He starred in 31 movies, drew record audiences to his shows, garnered record television ratings, and had 14 Grammy Award nominations.

He won 3 Grammys for his Gospel music.

While it is common for musicians to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, honorees during the Obama administration included Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Gloria Estefan, Diana Ross, Loretta Lynn, and Bruce Springsteen

Presley is the third musician to receive the honor posthumously: the previous ones were the bandleader Meredith Willson and the great Count Basie during the Reagan administration.

With the relationship between the entertainment industry and Trump not going through its prime, the administration opted to honor American icons such as Presley and Ruth for the 2018 ceremony.

Senator Orrin Hatch, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach, football player-turned-judge Alan Page and Republican megadonor Miriam Adelson also received the Medal.
