ELVIS
NOVEMBER 23, 1956
That day, a young amateur photographer who worked for his high school newspaper was invited to photograph Elvis Presley at the Cleveland Arena, Ohio.
A labor strike at all three of Cleveland’s major newspapers that day meant that Lew Allen, then 17, became the only photographer at the concert.

“…I was standing in the hallway and one of the managers came up to Elvis and said there was a girl on the phone who was in the hospital,” Allen explains of this photo of Elvis on the phone. “…she had tickets to the show and couldn’t attend because she had A serious illness”.
Elvis: ‘…I want to talk to her’, and he went into a room to talk to that girl, delaying the start of the show by fifteen minutes”.
“…had a long conversation with her and asked her several questions, with warmth and interest. Elvis was a gentleman.”
