Back in the middle of the last century, American society was not prepared for the blow of the first Rock’n’Roll, much less so that it could be led by, among others, a woman.

 If it was already a scandal that a seductive teenager with a voice as penetrating as Elvis Presley revolutionized hormones by shaking hips or that black singers like Chuck Berry or Little Richard were masters of the formula for a devilish sound full of lewdness, all that was missing was that a girl could get the same as them. 

And Wanda Jackson got it. 

Wanda rocked her hips as much as Elvis Presley’s. When the Elvis phenomenon began to gather whirlwind strength with his traveling shows in the southern states in 1955, Wanda Jackson was with him. 

Elvis, the great rising star, became very friendly with her. They fooled around and partyed together after concerts. He gave her a ring that she wore on a chain around her neck for a long time. 

Elvis urged Wanda to record Rock’n’Roll songs.

 She, like him, came from the Country. Even his father had been a cowboy singer but gave it up during the Great Depression. 

With her tight dresses, high heels and long earrings, she turned to rock’n’roll and with that explosive combo of attitude, energy and sass, a lot of sass, Wanda Jackson established herself as the head of Rock-A-Billy on songs like “Fujiyama Mama” in 1957 and “Rock Your Baby” in 1958.
