PARKER AND THE CONTRACT ON THE TABLECLOTH

Those who saw the recent movie Elvis will remember that this situation appears in the movie. Elvis Curiosities: The day after Elvis Presley opened his performances at Las Vegas International Hotel in 1969, the resort’s President, Alex Shoofey, was in the showroom having a cup of coffee with Presley’s Manager, Colonel Tom Parker.
Despite the great success on opening night, Shoofey was unhappy because the king of rock and roll had been hired for only two weeks a year at the new 1,500-room complex that is today the Las Vegas Hilton. “Listen,” Shoofey said. to Parker…”I would like to extend his contract.”Parker objected: “Alex, it’s too early. Let’s see if he (Presley) can do it or not…”I won’t let this opportunity pass” said Shoofey..while On a white tablecloth on the table he wrote some ideas… the offer was: he committed Elvis to perform two shows every night for four weeks a year (February and August), and by signing for five years, Elvis would receive a payment of 5 million of dollars plus all his expenses including the cost of the band.
At the time of negotiating the contract, the colonel wrote important points on the white tablecloth that covered the restaurant table, on which a clause was included in which it was stipulated that if Shoofey was leaving the hotel, the contract had to be renegotiated. And as it happened, in 1971, Kirk Kerkorian, owner of the Flamingo and the Internacional, sold his hotels to Baron Hilton, owner of The Hotel Hilton Company.
As expected, Henry Lewin took over as the new president to replace Shoofey and the hotel changed its name to the Las Vegas Hilton. The colonel had saved the tablecloth used at that lunch…with a tablecloth and with Lewin they made a new contract.
Currently this tablecloth with the contract signed between Shoofey and Parker is exhibited in Graceland.
