Elvis on tour in May 1956

By Rosa García Mora

On May 27, 1956 Elvis, Scotty Moore, Bill Black and DJ Fontana performed two shows at the University of Fieldhouse. Dayton, Ohio.

It was the last stop on a Midwest tour that month, which included stops in Minnesota, La Crosse, Wisconsin, Little Rock, Arkansas, Kansas, Nebraska and Detroit, among others.

The tour featured the same acts at virtually every show, including the Flaim Brothers and their Orchestra, Irish tenor Frank Connors, comedian Phil Maraquin, and the Jordanaires.

The shows were scheduled for 2:00 and 8:00 p.m., leaving open the option of adding a third if ticket sales justified it. Although in the end it was not carried out.

The photo in this article was taken by the famous American artist, painter and photographer Marvin Israel, who I have already talked about before. Marvin in those years worked as an art director for Seventeen magazine.

Marvin Israel’s photos portray, as we can see, a young Elvis during a crucial year in his career, 1956, capturing his impressive magnetic sensuality, physical attractiveness and innate sense of glamour; from the spontaneity, movement and the crudest realism of the New York school.

Below is the link to one of the wonderful performances of the tour, from May 16 in Little Rock:
