EDGE OF REALITY: ELVIS RECEIVES MORE REALITY-FRIENDLY SCRIPTS
On March 4, Elvis begins recording the soundtrack and filming the Metro Goldwyn Mayer movie Live a Little, Love a Little. Initially titled Kiss My Firm But Pliant Lips, it is an adult comedy-melodrama. Like the previous film, Stay Away, Joe, it is a real departure from the typical Presley movie. It is another breath of fresh air and allows Elvis to play the role of a person in keeping with the society of 1968.
The soundtrack, recorded at Western Recorders in Los Angeles, is conducted by Billy Strange, and among the songs contributed are the songs “Almost In Love,” “Little Less Conversations” and “Edge Of Reality.”
ELVIS IS DEEPLY SADDENED BY THE NEWS OF MARTIN LUTHER KING’S DEATH
Elvis is deeply saddened by the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King on April 4, 1968. Elvis has been a long-time admirer of his and often quotes his famous line “I Have a Dream.” Just shortly afterward Robert Kennedy is assassinated on June 6, 1968. Elvis’ thoughts and feelings about the loss of both Dr. King and Robert Kennedy result in a song that will be written for Elvis to perform on his upcoming television special.
“Speedway” was released nationwide on June 12, 1968, reaching #40 on the list of top-grossing films. The soundtrack did not improve in terms of results either, placing at a low number #82.
