KRIS KRISTOFFERSON DIES

By Rosa García Mora

Kris Kristofferson left us… Sadly all the greats are leaving us. He died on September 28, at the age of 88 at his home in Maui (Hawaii). I want to pay tribute to him, through the story of one of his wonderful compositions.
Great composer, actor and singer. Rest in peace, teacher.

“FOR THE GOOD TIMES”

This delicious and heartfelt song was composed by Kris Kristofferson, “The Country Music’s Highwayman.”

Kris Kristofferson , considered one of the best songwriters in country and popular music, Kristofferson had to overcome a very hard life and bad luck, but he did it with determination, determination and guts, and then wrote about it with the delicacy, tenderness and sensitivity of a romantic poet, leaving his insides captured in his songs, and “For The Good Times” is no exception.

The song achieved great success in its recording career by a large number of artists.
It was first recorded by singer Bill Nash in 1968.
It was later recorded by Ray Price, and with him, it became a number 1 single in June 1970.
In April 1970, its author recorded it on his debut album titled: “Kristofferson.”

Kris Kristofferson wrote most of the song in 1968. He was on a work-related road trip. It was traveling from Nashville to the Gulf of Mexico. And from that inspiration, arising in the coldness of a road, Kris tells us the end of a love story, of his love story; since the song is based on a sad life experience of loss.

ELVIS PRESLEY VERSION

When Elvis recorded this song, although it was already preceded by great commercial success, that was not a handicap for Elvis to make it his own, as he always did.

Elvis recorded it in RCA Studio C in Hollywood on March 27, 1972.
It was also recorded a few months later, on June 10, 1972, at Madison Square Garden in New York and released for the first time on the live album “Elvis As Recorded at Madison Square Garden“, where he gave a magnificent and delicious performance.

Kris Kristofferson was always a big fan of Elvis and, in his young beginnings as a songwriter, he would never have imagined that Elvis would sing some of his songs. Krish was always grateful to Elvis for performing his compositions. He never imagined that Elvis would get to sing three of them. The songs that Elvis recorded of his authorship were:
Help Me Make It Through The Night“, “For the Good Times” and “Why Me Lord“, live.

The first time Kris Kristofferson heard his song in Elvis’ voice, he was absolutely blown away.

Elvis made it his own, to the point that it really makes you feel that he was singing it from his own experiences, and he soaked in it, as always, singing it from the depths of his soul. Recorded at a very sad and very difficult moment in his life for him, just like Kris Kristofferson when he composed it, it conveys to us the pain he was going through at that time. Elvis takes us with the sweet fragrance of the song, to feel it as part of himself, just as he lived it, with the same sadness, acquiescence and longing of those good times that became a painful memory of a lost love. Like an authentic autobiographical song, where Elvis opens his soul to his own grief, just as Kris himself did.

“Don’t look so sad
I know it’s over
But life goes on
And this world keeps on turning, yeah

Let’s just be glad
We have this time to spend together
There is no need
To watch the bridges that we’re burning

Lay your head (lay your head)
On my pillow, sweet baby
Hold your warm (and tender body) and tender body
Close to mine
Hear the whisper of the raindrops
Blowin’ softly against my window
Oh, late at night
(Make believe) make believe you love me
(Make believe) one more time
For the good times”

Rest in peace Kris. Your songs and your legacy will remain alive in us forever…
