ELVIS PRESLEY. APRIL 3, 1957
When Presley took the stage at the Ottawa Auditorium in Canada, the audience of more than 9,000 people was so loud that it was impossible to hear Elvis singing.
Fans were in a frenzy of Elvis worship:
“…some were crying, some were moaning; some were holding their heads in ecstasy; everyone was screaming, kicking, clapping, waving their arms; one person got down on all fours and pounded the ground.”
Police were out in record numbers because there was concern that fans would rush the stage. His “suggestive” dance and pelvic movements scandalized many parents and authority figures. Teenagers traveled from as far away as Montreal to attend the shows.
A special train, nicknamed the ‘Rock’n’Roll Cannon Ball’, was packed with more than 500 concert-goers.
The Notre Dame convent, viewing Presley as immoral and un-Christian (!), banned its students from attending the concert. Eight students were expelled after going to see the King and controversy gripped the city. The nuns later rescinded the expulsions, but at least half of the girls remained enrolled in different schools.
Elvis Presley really made a big impression in Ottawa.
