ELVIS, LAS VEGAS, APRIL 1956
On April 22, Elvis arrives in Las Vegas for a two-week performance in the Venus Room at the New Frontier Hotel. During his stay in Las Vegas, Elvis meets many stars such as Johnny Ray and Liberace; Freddie Bell and the Bellboys inspire Elvis with their rendition of Big Mama Thornton’s “Hound Dog.”
And while in Las Vegas, “Heartbreak Hotel” hits #1 on the charts.
The first show is April 23 at 8pm but this adult audience isn’t prepared for the music their kids love.
And the engagement becomes a torture for Elvis;
“…it was horrible…it didn’t reach the audience,” Elvis Presley admitted in 1959.
Variety writes, “…to teenagers he’s a genius, but to ‘the average spender’ in Las Vegas, he’s just a fizz.”
In the boxset “Live in Las Vegas” we can appreciate Elvis’ frustration when he says “…thank you, music lovers”, in a very sarcastic way.
The public didn’t change much, but Elvis did…
