I CAN’T STOP LOVING YOU

By Rosa García Mora

I Can’t Stop Loving You“, it is a popular song, which was written and composed by the composer, singer and country musician Don Gibson, who recorded it for the first time on December 3, 1957.

At the time of Gibson’s death in 2003, the song had been recorded by more than 700 artists.

The song was covered by Ray Charles in 1962, and released as a single reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1962, for five weeks.

In 2006, the song was also released on another Ray Charles album: “Ray Sings, Basie Swings” which mixes previously unreleased vocal performances by Ray Charles with instrumental tracks by “The Count Basie Orchestra”. A very interesting release of this track.

Elvis Presley, upon his return to the stage on July 31, 1969, introduced this song into his repertoire, performing a magnificent version.

RCA was preparing to record a live album, Elvis’ first, and made a series of recordings of performances from this first season. The first was the August 3, 1969, Dinner Show, followed by performances from August 21-26, 1969, at the International Hotel in Las Vegas.

On August 25, at the Midnight Show, RCA recorded the song “I Can’t Stop Loving You” which was used to be released on October 14, 1969, on the double album “From Memphis to Vegas/From Vegas to Memphis“, and which would later be released as a single album, under the name “Elvis in Person”.

With his performance on the album version “Elvis in Person” Elvis would inaugurate the presence of this song in his discography, and it shows why Elvis insisted so much on having such spectacular choruses that he liked so much.

The interpretations of this song are very vigorous in Elvis’ version, they can be heard full of great force, especially in these first seasons in Las Vegas and they had the impetus, the power and the overwhelming rage of that Elvis full of desire to be on stage, and where the choirs of The Imperials (in these first years) and the Sweet Inspirations take on, as I say, great prominence. Most artists at that time sang alone with an orchestra, but Elvis was different. He always liked these voice games and he loved vocal groups, which for him would always be a great vocal support, and would give a very special touch to all his interpretations.

Also well known are the performances of this song from the third season of Las Vegas in August 1970, as they were recorded and filmed for the documentary film “That’s The Way It Is”.

Elvis would continue to introduce this song into his later repertoires.
