The 39th President of the United States is dead
“The death of Elvis Presley robs our country of a part of itself. He was unique and irreplaceable. More than twenty years ago, he burst onto the scene with a flourish that was unprecedented and will likely never be repeated. His music and personality, fusing the styles of white country and black rhythm and blues, permanently changed the face of American popular culture. He had a huge following, and for people around the world he was a symbol of the vitality, rebelliousness and positive attitude of his country.”
With these words, on August 16, 1977, Jimmy Carter said goodbye to Elvis Presley. The thirty-ninth president of the United States died on December 29, 2024. He was 100 years old.
Carter took office as US President on January 20, 1977. He held this position until 1981. Before that, he was, among other things, Governor of Georgia (January 12, 1971 – January 14, 1975). It was during this time that he met the famous King of Rock’n’Roll.
The meeting took place backstage at Presley’s late-night concert at the Omni Coliseum in Atlanta on June 30, 1973. Carter’s wife, Rosalynn, also attended.
In a later interview, Jimmy Carter claimed that in the summer of 1977, he received a phone call from Elvis. Presley allegedly asked him during the conversation for a presidential pardon for a friendly sheriff who had fallen foul of the law. The president then explained that he could not help him because the sheriff’s case had not even been heard in court yet.
Carter noted that during the aforementioned conversation, Elvis was… to put it mildly, in poor shape.
