KING CREOLE. DIRECTION AND PHOTOGRAPHY

KING CREOLE. DIRECTION AND PHOTOGRAPHY…. Directed by Michael Curtiz and produced by Hal B. Wallis. The story was adapted from Harold Robbins’ 1952 novel A Stone for Danny Fisher.

It was Elvis’ most critically acclaimed performance and considered the best of all the films he starred in, as well as his best narrative film. King Creole benefited from the talents of Hollywood’s greatest at the time.

Producer Hal Wallis chose one of his closest associates, the highly respected Michael Curtiz, as the film’s director, best known for directing Casablanca. Curtiz had a deft command of a wide variety of film genres during his 30-year career. The tight control over the film and subplots in King Creole reflects Curtiz’s experience.

Other Hollywood veterans who formed the team included director of photography Russell Harlan, who photographed the film with a dark, moody, even seedy lighting style that perfectly captured the atmosphere of the film.

Filmed on location in New Orleans, Curtiz, with talented Oscar-nominated black-and-white cinematographer Russell Harlan at his side, made ‘King Creole’ an incredibly beautiful film to watch. Its rich black-and-white tones are a tribute to a very particular style of filmmaking that is sadly not seen often anymore.

All this, together with Elvis’ impeccable performance, an excellent cast of actors: Dolores Hart, Carolyn Jones, Dean Jagger, Vic Morrow and Walter Matthau, and what is, for me, also its best soundtrack, make King Creole an unforgettable film.
