“Elvis Presley: The Iconic 1957 Ottawa Performance That Shook Canada”
Presley performed on stage at the Ottawa Auditorium, during the evening show, on April 3, 1957. Elvis arrived in town that same day.
At last night’s performance in Toronto, Elvis Presley wore his full gold lamé suit, designed by Nudie Cohn, for the last time. Elvis Presley wore this suit on stage for the first time in Chicago on March 28, 1957 and only wore the full lamé suit for three performances: in Chicago on March 28; in St. Louis, Missouri on March 29; and in Toronto, Canada on April 2.

In this concert we see that Elvis wore only three elements of the gold suit: jacket, belt, and shoes. Elvis chose not to wear the tie and pants of the gold suit. On Elvis’s next tour to the Pacific Northwest in late summer, he would also discard the gold shoes.
As we know, Elvis was not comfortable in this suit. He immediately stopped wearing the trousers because they were very uncomfortable and he could not move freely in them. He replaced them with black trousers…

Regarding the social and cultural impact of these performances, there was perhaps no greater event in Ottawa’s popular culture in the 1950s than the Elvis Presley concerts held at the Auditorium in April 1957.
Presley embodied the spirit of rock n’ roll, the spirit of breaking with the established order, that new phenomenon unknown to adults and to puritanical society. His presence in the city led thousands of teenagers and young adults to fits of passionate hysteria, to uncontrollable emotions, to amazement, to madness… when they listened to his music and contemplated his fascinating stage presence, and he left a mark on their lives, as in the lives of so many others, due to the great social revolution that he represented for them.
Elvis was their reference, he was their inspiration, a mirror in which to see their desires reflected… there and in the rest of the world.
