July 11, 1961. Elvis at the forefront of fashion
Always at the forefront of fashion, Elvis commissioned Alan Fortas to purchase a pair of Renauld glasses, and Alan recounted how Presley managed to acquire this pair of glasses, which had just come onto the market at the time.
“…I was with Elvis while they were filming the movie ‘Follow That Dream’ in Ocala, Florida, and Elvis wanted a pair of those glasses, which had just come out.
He sent me to look for stores in the area, and I couldn’t find anything; but when Elvis wanted something, he wanted it ‘immediately.’
Well, Elvis, he has an eagle eye, he saw a person in the crowd wearing a pair of those glasses that he wanted. He called me screaming and pointed at the person who told me to go ask him where he bought them. It turns out the guy who was using them got them as a gift and didn’t know where he bought them.
I said, ‘I’ll give you $50 for them,’ but he said he’d give them to me for $100.
This is how Elvis finally got the glasses he wanted and wore them constantly while making the movie. At one point he got fed up with this model and when he started using another pair he gave them to me.”
At the auction held on August 12, 2017, at Graceland, the estimated sale price was between $8,000 and $10,000. And they sold for USD 11,875.
