“The King” and “The Boss”

Did you know that Bruce Springsteen (The Boss) can be seen wearing an Elvis (The King) Fan Club badge on the cover of his classic 1975 album “Born To Run”?

Elvis’s image is on the button seen on Bruce’s guitar strap, a badge of the now-defunct Elvis Presley fan club called The King’s Court.

The group was formed in 1972 by fans who met while waiting in line for the initial ticket sales for Elvis’s four concerts at Madison Square Garden. One of the first in line was Staten Island native Al Hanson, who eventually became the club’s treasurer. The club folded shortly after Elvis’s death. Hanson bought a copy of “Born to Run” when he finally began exploring Bruce’s catalog.

Hanson recognized the King’s Court button on the album cover. “The only way Bruce could have one of those buttons,” he remembers thinking, “is if he was in our fan club or knew someone who was. We distributed those buttons only to members.”

After discovering the King’s Court button in Born to Run, Hanson called Patricia Chmara, the former president of the Club, who had also become a big Springsteen fan. However, there was a list of King’s Court members that included a “Pam” in New Jersey, whom Chmara suspected might have been Springsteen’s younger sister, now a professional photographer.

If Chmara was right, Pamela Springsteen would undoubtedly have been one of the youngest members of the Fan Club, as she was only about ten years old when the club was formed. (Through her agent, Pamela Springsteen declined to comment.)

The image of Elvis on the button was cropped from a backstage publicity photo taken of Presley in Las Vegas in the summer of 1970 (Elvis: That’s the Way It Is).

Bruce wore his button in numerous photos taken by Eric Meola during the album cover sessions for Born to Run.
