July 1, 1956

At a newsstand in Penn Station, Elvis is browsing the papers and notices a newspaper. On the front page is a story about a mid-air collision between two planes over the Grand Canyon.

Elvis is engrossed in the story. Earlier that year, Elvis’ own tour plane made a terrifying emergency landing between Amarillo, Texas and Nashville, Tennessee. Elvis was afraid of flying and was shocked by the news.

Elvis was at Penn Station, on his way back to New York, waiting to catch a cab to the Hudson Theater, while continuing to read the newspaper.

On this day Elvis performed at the Hudson Theatre in New York on NBC’s “The Steve Allen Show“.

On this day Elvis suffered the greatest humiliation of his career by having to sing his song, Hound Dog , to a basset hound on a pedestal wearing a top hat.

Allen with this wanted to avoid the controversy that occurred after Elvis appeared shaking his hips on ”The Milton Berle Show”.
