Year 1865; Three Confederate brothers from the Reno family, unaware that the war is over, manage to steal the payroll of a division of the Union army and head home with the money. Vance (Richard Egan), dreams of reuniting with the love of his life, Cathy (Debra Paget), but discovers that, after the three brothers had been presumed dead, Cathy married Clint, the youngest of the Reno brothers. (role played by Elvis). Vance resigns himself to this setback of fate, until one day she realizes that she is still in love with him. To further complicate the situation, the United States military knows that the Reno brothers are the perpetrators of the robbery.
Love Tender marked the first appearance on the big screen of rising star Elvis Presley. Although without playing a role that carried the weight of the film, her performance was more than remarkable, in a film set during the last hours of the American Civil War in which she performed four songs, including the one that gives the film its title. .
