I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry

By Rosa García Mora

Hear that lonesome winter bird
He sounds too blue to fly
The midnight train is whining low
I’m so lonesome, I could cry

Did you ever see a robin weep
When leaves began to die? (Oh, oh, oh)
That means he’s lost the will to live
I’m so lonesome, I could cry

The silence of a falling star
Lights up a purple sky (oh, oh, oh)
And as I wonder where you are
I’m so lonesome, I could cry
I’m so lonesome, I could cry

The song was recorded by Elvis on 01/14/1973, live, on the television show “Aloha from Hawaii via satellite” and first released on his self-titled album.

A sad ballad composed and recorded by American country music singer-songwriter Hank Williams in 1949.

Williams wrote hits such as “Your Cheatin’ Heart” which was also recorded by Elvis. However, his health deteriorated very quickly due to excessive use of alcohol and painkillers, as he suffered severe back pain and died suddenly in the back of his car on January 1, 1953 at just 29 years old.

Hank Williams recorded his original version of this song on August 30, 1949 and Elvis said of the song: “It’s probably the saddest song I’ve ever heard in my life.”

The song is about loneliness and was heavily inspired by the singer-songwriter’s troubled relationship with his wife Audrey Sheppard.

Elvis, as always, makes it his own, with that feeling of deep sadness that he conveyed to him. A magnificent and very painful interpretation, which was also in keeping with his state of mind at that time. These were very hard days for Elvis and the year that awaited him was going to be a very difficult one for him.
