Released in June 1972, “Elvis As Recorded At Madison Square Garden” is perhaps the best live album of Elvis’ career. In 1972, RCA intended to release a new Elvis live LP, initially with recordings made at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel (formerly the International Hotel) that would go along with studio material (LP that would be titled Standing Room Only). This release was discarded, in favor of recordings of the new documentary that Elvis would record in 1972 during the months of March and April of that year, titled “Elvis On Tour”.
It was also discarded and finally, taking advantage of Elvis’ return to the city of skyscrapers, it was decided to record two concerts of the four that would be held at Madison Square Garden. The one from the night of June 10 was released.
Elvis’ voice was impeccable, the dynamism of the performance, without seeing it (we could later see it) can be imagined, and the band is immeasurable. It was a success in every sense.
The LP was released just 8 days after the recording, reaching number 11 on the Billboard charts. The album’s sales were very good, selling more than 500,000 copies in the first two weeks, quickly earning it gold status. Currently, the LP is classified by the RIAA as triple platinum.
