The single Burning Love / It’s A Matter Of Time was released in August 1972. The recording sessions for these songs took place in March 1972 at RCA’s Studio C in Hollywood. The recording session was prior to rehearsals for the tour that Elvis would undertake in April 1972 and that would be filmed for the movie “Elvis On Tour“.
Elvis, who had recently broken up with Priscilla, was not very keen on recording, and if he did, the material was very associated with his mood. In all this, the credit went to Felton Jarvis who insisted that Elvis record a song by the composer Dennis Linde, with whom Jarvis had a relationship and that it was a rockabilly style song. Elvis was not at all keen on doing it but in the end he agreed, and with a very simple style they finished it quickly.
It is a wonderful song, which already draws you in from the intro, and for not having much desire to do it, Elvis nails it. Felton Jarvis didn’t do too many arrangements (although he did get the guitar intro by the song’s author Dennis Linde right), and it was perfect.
The B-side of the single was a composition by the Englishman Clive Westlake (How The Web Was Woven, Twenty Days And Twenty Nights). The country-style song had lyrics associated with Elvis’s current mood, who only wanted to sing about songs related to loss, separation, etc. It’s a good song, but again, the arrangements take away from the beauty of what Elvis and his band recorded.
The single was a real sales success, and together with the recent release of the LP of his concert at Madison Square Garden, it put Elvis back on the crest of the wave in terms of popularity and musical success.
The single reached number 2 on the Billboard charts and sold more than a million copies. Currently this single is classified by the RIAA as a platinum record.
