ELVIS ON TOUR 2022 – CONTENT, STORY

Thanks to the phenomenal success of the 2022 feature film “Elvis,” director Baz Luhrmann’s musical biopic, Elvis Presley is hotter than he has been in decades.

RCA/Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, has announced the release of a box set of “Elvis On Tour,” a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the King’s monumental 1972 concert tour, featuring a large number of of unreleased live and studio material.

The box ships on December 2.

The seven-disc set includes six audio discs of concert performances and studio rehearsals and the Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Blu-Ray edition of the MGM film “Elvis On Tour,” winner of Best Documentary Feature at the 30th edition of the Golden Globes in 1973 and the last feature film starring Presley to be released during his lifetime.

The box set is produced by Ernst Mikael Jørgensen and mixed by Grammy Award-winning producer Matt Ross-Spang.

It has 145 tracks, including 91 previously unreleased tracks. The original recordings were made by Felton Jarvis and Al Pachucki.

As Presley’s national tour played sold-out shows across the country in 1972, Elvis was having fun onstage and finding electrifying new ways to connect with the audience at each show.

Working with a band and setlists of his choice, Elvis channeled the music he loved most, from traditional Pop, Pospel and Country to Blues, Rock’n’Roll and contemporary hits, while transforming his own greatest hits with new arrangements, turning nostalgia in an unforgettable memory.

Award-winning filmmakers Pierre Adidge and Robert Abel (“Mad Dogs & Englishmen”) went on tour with Presley and his band with all-access passes, cameras and gear to chronicle the King of Rock’n’Roll in his heyday on the stage in “Elvis On Tour”.

According to the original MGM press release, the film “…provides the first intimate look at the enigmatic young man who became the world’s most celebrated musician.”

Both documentary and concert film, “Elvis On Tour” features montage sequences supervised by Martin Scorsese.

The film was released on November 1, 1972.

“Elvis On Tour” includes notes from Jerry Schilling, a longtime personal friend and member of Elvis’s inner circle.

The set also includes an essay by rock historian and musician Warren Zanes, founding member of The Del Fuegos and New York University professor. According to Zanes: “…the set lists and performances of the ‘Elvis On Tour’ period bring something rare: a legend from the 1950s who was working in the early 1970s and was still taking his audiences to new places. ..

1972 was a year of 165 concerts. Jørgensen: “…it was the ‘climax of his career'”.

While the ’68 Comeback Special marked a return to live performance, 1972 was the year the artist more fully revealed what he wanted to do with the creative energy such a comeback initiated.”

A definitive portrait of the artist in 1972, the “Elvis On Tour” box set follows the release of Warner Bros. Pictures’ epic big-screen drama “Elvis” from filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, starring Austin Butler in the title role and Tom Hanks as Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis’s manager and technical advisor since his early days.

As of August 11, the film had grossed $253 million at the worldwide box office, the second-highest-grossing music biopic of all time, behind Bohemian Rhapsody, and number 11 overall for all of 2022.
