ELVIS AND ANN ELLINGTON, THE TENNESSEE GOVERNOR’S DAUGHTER

On March 8, 1961, Elvis drove his Rolls Royce to Nashville to be honored by the Tennessee Legislature, where he was awarded the title of ”Honorary Colonel” by Governor Buford Ellington. Elvis received as a token of his appointment, a pin and an oversized certificate, to be framed.

This distinction was awarded to him for all the good things he had done for the state of Tennessee.

Accompanied by the governor’s daughter, Ann Ellington, Elvis took a private tour of the mansion.

On his way back to Memphis, Elvis stopped at the Tennessee State Prison to visit Johnny Bragg, lead singer of the Prisonaires.

Ann, Governor Buford’s daughter, when she met Elvis was impressed and struck up a good relationship with him.

Elvis returned to Nashville the following week for the recording of the soundtrack sessions for the movie Blue Hawaii, for Paramount

He called Ann beforehand and asked if she was going to be in town and if it was possible for them to see each other during those days.

Ann told him yes and when he arrived, he was greeted at the governor’s residence, by Ann and her parents.

They spent most of that night there, just the two of them in one of the small living rooms downstairs talking about Mississippi, about the movies he had made, about all his projects, the songs he wanted to sing ….. And around two in the morning, Elvis politely said goodbye and left the mansion.

On the 23rd, Ann was also with him and attended the recording sessions. It was the day Elvis recorded one of his most iconic songs, ”Can’t Help Falling In Love,” at Radio Recorders Studio B in Hollywood.

Ann, in an interview said of Elvis, ”I think any woman who had the opportunity to sit down and meet him, even for five minutes, finds a love for him that words can’t describe.”
