When WMPS radio DJ Bob Neal offered Elvis his professional services as manager, Presley immediately accepted.
The contract with Bob Neal was for one year and it was signed on December 29, 1954.
It stipulated that Neal would receive a 15% commission on all performances, and the rest of the money would be divided between Elvis (50%) and Scotty Moore and Bill Black (25% each).
Scotty Moore and Bill Black were elated.
But the euphoria was short-lived, after speaking with Elvis, Bob Neal told them that it had been decided that their old verbal agreement, whereby Elvis received 50% and Scotty and Bill each received 25%, was no longer acceptable.
It was the end of the ‘Blue Moon Boys‘.
Scotty and Bill blamed Parker, but Neal told them that it was not the Colonel’s doing since he had not yet taken office.
Despite Neal’s protests that it wasn’t Parker, and evidence that the decision was made by Elvis Presley himself, Scotty refused to believe that Elvis would betray him.
Scotty Moore and Bill Black agreed to go for hire.
From now on, they would receive a weekly salary of USD 200 if they were working and USD 100 if they were not doing it.
“…my contract was with Elvis Presley, and not with Scotty and Bill,” he later explained. “…they didn’t have a contract with me or Sun.”
