ELVIS IN HIS FIRST RECORDING SESSION FOR RCA

FIRST SUCCESSES

“HEARTBREAK HOTEL, ITS FIRST GREAT CLASSIC”

With the signing of Elvis’ contract with RCA, the company quickly began preparing for Elvis’s first recording session. RCA had the songs he had acquired from the SUN label, which he would re-release, now with the new label, to buy time while Elvis recorded new songs to be able to release a single and begin to recover the investment made in his new artist. As at the beginning of 1956, Elvis still had some tour commitments already agreed upon, it was agreed that the first session would take place in Nashville on January 10, and in the process allowed Elvis to celebrate his 21st birthday on the 8th.

ELVIS PERFORMS HIS 1ST RECORDING SESSION WITH RCA

On January 10, 1956, two days after his twenty-first birthday, Elvis had his first recording session for the RCA label, which took place at his studio in Nashville. Among the songs planned on tape during this session was “Heartbreak Hotel.” The first single with RCA, “Heartbreak Hotel”/”I Was The One” is released and sells more than 300,000 copies in its first three weeks. It would soon become number 1 on the Billboard singles chart. for eight weeks and also #1 on the country charts, and #5 on the R&B chart. It becomes Elvis’s first single to sell more than a million copies, giving him his first gold record on January 27, 1956.

Elvis appears with Scotty, Bill and DJ under the production of Jackie Gleason on the program “Stage Show” on January 28, 1956, starring Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, on the CBS television network. This is Elvis’s first appearance on television. He will appear five more nights on the “Stage Show” in the coming weeks. The last of these six appearances will be on March 24.

In parallel, travel and concerts continue during this time, including appearances on the “Louisiana Hayride”, appearances that he has yet to make since he is under contract.
