“LAS VEGAS WAS NOT READY FOR ME, NOR I FOR THEM”, ELVIS PRESLEY
Film contract and first performance in Las Vegas. On April 2, 1956, Elvis signs a film contract with producer Hal Wallis and Paramount Pictures. The contract includes an option for six more films. A few days later he will make his debut in the city of Las Vegas. Compared to the usual hysteria, Elvis receives a cold acceptance for his two-week engagement at the New Frontier Hotel. Not exactly what the adult Las Vegas crowd is looking for.
During these two weeks, the single “Heartbreak Hotel”, and the album “Elvis Presley”, are at number one on the Billboard pop charts. Thanks to all this, the traveling and live performances around the country and the release of new albums, the crowds get bigger and bigger and wilder. Elvis’s fame grows spectacularly. Some of these performances have to end early because fans “storm” the stage. Elvis creates hysteria and chaos wherever he goes.
