THE KING OF ROCK&ROLL FINDS HIS HOME
In March, Elvis buys the Graceland mansion, where he will live with his parents and paternal grandmother. The purchase costs $102,500. The house will allow Elvis and his family to enjoy more space and privacy, given that in his current house, there is a daily influx of fans and curious people who want to see Elvis. The house needs a complete renovation, which will be ready for them to move in on May 16, 1957. Elvis, due to his different commitments, does not spend his first night at Graceland until June 26, 1957.
ELVIS PRESLEY BIOGRAPHY
IN MAY 1957 THE FILMING OF THE FILM “JAILHOUSE ROCK” BEGINS
In April, while on tour with his show, Elvis performs outside the US for the first time, appearing in Canada. He played two shows in Toronto on April 2, and two more in Ottawa on April 3. By May, Elvis begins work on his third film, “Jailhouse Rock.” Elvis’s third film is for the Metro Goldwyn Mayer film company with whom the Colonel had also closed an agreement to make different films. Under the direction of Richard Thorpe and co-star Judy Tyler (who died shortly after filming wrapped), Elvis will play Vince Everett, a young man who is imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. In the film he once again plays a rebellious and non-conformist role. The soundtrack is made up almost entirely of compositions by the duo Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller, among which stand out Jailhouse Rock and Baby I Don’t Care.
