CHARITY CONCERT IN HIS HOME CITY
On September 27, Elvis returns once again to the city of his birth to perform. This time it is a benefit concert for the creation of the Elvis Presley Youth Recreation Center in Tupelo, Mississippi. Elvis will regularly donate money to the center for the rest of his life.

“Jailhouse Rock,” Elvis’ third film, premieres in Memphis on July 17. Domestically, it opens on November 18 and hits #3 in terms of box office. It will finish at #14 that year. In 1969, its earnings in the US and Canada were roughly comparable to those of “The Wizard of Oz.” The title song is a hit. Years later, this film will be considered one of the best of Elvis in quality, only surpassed by “King Creole”, from 1958. “Jailhouse Rock” will come to be considered the last classic of all “rock opera” films. The production of the scene where it is performed is recognized as the precursor of music videos, a format that would become very popular in the 1980s.
