THE FILMING OF KING CREOLE

In January 1958, once the Christmas holidays were over and his 23rd anniversary had been celebrated, Elvis left Memphis for California where he began filming his fourth film, an adaptation of the novel “A Stone For Danny Fisher.” It is the second film for Paramount Pictures, produced by Hal B. Wallis. On this occasion, the film is directed by veteran director Michael Curtiz, who years before had directed the film “Casablanca.” Set in New Orleans, the cast includes actor Walter Matthau, Dean Jagger, Carolyn Jones and again Dolores Heart (Loving You). The film is perhaps the most consistent in terms of script. The soundtrack will also have the same quality (recorded at the Radio Recorders), which again has a good selection of songs among which new compositions by the admired Jerry Leiber & Mike Stone stand out. After shuffling several titles, the film will be titled King Creole and will be considered by many to be the best interpretation of him on the big screen.

WITH HIS ENTRY INTO THE ARMY, THE STAGE IS CLOSED. NOTHING WOULD BE THE SAME AGAIN

After finishing his film commitments, on March 24, Elvis Presley was admitted to the US Army. He was assigned serial number 53310761. On April 25, Elvis received his famous haircut at Fort Chaffee. , Arkansas. Four days later, on March 28, Elvis arrives at Fort Hood, Texas, for basic training and is stationed there for six months. In order to leave new recorded material that can be published during his absence, thanks to a brief leave from the army, a one-night mini session is prepared in Nashville at the new Studio B, where he will record 5 songs that, with the exception of one, will all be published during his military service. For the first time, Scotty Moore and Bill Black, with whom he has financial differences, are not present in the studio for this session. Scotty would play with Elvis again in the 60’s but Bill Black would not return, starting his own career with his band “Bill Black Combo”. These absences are covered by Chet Atkins, Hank Garland and Bob Moore, to whom a new drummer is added (who will accompany DJ Fontana) such as Buddy Harman and pianist Floyd Cramer. It will be Elvis’s last recording session in the 50’s. With his entry into the army, the first stage of Elvis’s career, the Rock & Roll stage, closes. By his return, everything would have changed, nothing would be the same again.
