On September 8, 1960, filming and recording of the soundtrack for his sixth film, “Flaming Star,” for 20th Century Fox began. The film is a drama with just a couple of songs. Elvis plays the son of a white father and a Native American mother, torn between the two cultures in the 1800s. The film also co-stars Barbara Eden.

It is a film where the songs barely exist, with which Elvis is very satisfied.

The “GI Blues” soundtrack enters the Billboard chart in October and soon reaches number #1. It remains number #1 for 10 weeks and remains on the charts for a total of 111 weeks. It is the most successful album of Elvis’ entire career on the Billboard charts. (“GI Blues” was the most successful album on the music charts. However, “Blue Hawaii” was the best-selling album during Elvis’ lifetime, with sales of 2 million copies in the first 12 months.)

FLAMING STAR RELEASES ON DECEMBER 22, 1960 WITH GOOD REVIEWS

On November 6, Elvis begins recording and filming his seventh film under the title “Wild in the Country”, again for 20th Century Fox, and which will be completed in January 1961.

“GI Blues” opens nationwide on November 23 to positive reviews and high box office sales. It was number #2 the first week and for the year on Variety’s list.

In 1969, Variety reported that GIBlues had grossed $4.3 million.

“Flaming Star” premiered nationwide on December 22, 1960 to good reviews, but unlike “GI Blues,” this dramatic film with few songs did not produce the expected box office.

The feeling is that people prefer to see Elvis singing, rather than giving a good performance.

It was number #12 at the box office in its opening week. Elvis nonetheless wins recognition from a tribal council for his positive portrayal of a Native American in this racial drama. The film is banned in southern Africa due to its interracial theme. Of the songs recorded for the soundtrack, only two will be published.
