NEW CONTRACTS AND NEW MANAGERS

** COLONEL TOM PARKER ENTERS THE SCENE **

On January 1, 1955, Elvis signs a contract with Bob Neal, who becomes his manager. A publicity photo is taken of the signing of the contract, in which Elvis himself, Bob Neal, and Sam Phillips appear. Bob Neal had actually acted as manager months ago, providing new performances for Elvis, Scotty and Bill, but given the increase in appearances and growing popularity, it was decided to formalize the union so that Elvis would have a legal representative. With three singles released (the second single contained the song Good Rockin’ Tonight and the third the song Milcow Blues Boogie) Elvis’ career continues steadily.

** ELVIS’ PERFORMANCES DO NOT GO UNNOTICED BY THE COL. TOM PARKER **

During his association with the Hayride, Elvis meets “Colonel” Tom Parker, a promoter and manager linked to various acts and the “Louisiana Hayride.” Parker is also the manager of country star Hank Snow. Parker previously had country star Eddy Arnold as a client but this relationship was about to break down, since Arnold wanted complete control of his career to which the Colonel would have to agree to everything and his refusals. Elvis’s performances and his growing popularity did not go unnoticed by Col.Parker, who realized the hysteria he was causing, especially in the female audience. With the conviction that he could make him a big star, he pulled his strings, to meet him, and collaborate with Bob Neal in booking new gigs and managing his career. His strategy was to gain Elvis’s trust and respect, and little by little take control of Elvis’s artistic career, making him see that if she associated with him, his dreams could come true. In one of his first meetings, Col.Parker will ask him the famous question of “son, what is your dream?” Elvis will confess his passion to become a great actor. In the coming months Col.Parker’s presence will become more and more frequent, interfering in the big decisions made about Elvis’s career.
