One city. One artist and… some of the most important musical moments in his career

By Mariusz Ogieglo

“Hello Memphis! “, Elvis Presley shouted from the Mid South Coliseum stage in March 1974. Exactly fifty years later, the official publisher of the albums of the legendary king of rock’n’roll, RCA/Legacy, seems to recall these words in a special way by releasing an anniversary box titled simply – “Memphis”.

The set, which will go on sale on August 9, will include five CDs with as many as one hundred and eleven songs. All recorded by Elvis in his hometown, Memphis.

Fans of Elvis (and not only them) will receive not only a unique collection of the famous singer’s recordings, such as “That’s All Right”, “In The Ghetto”, “Promised Land” or “Moody Blues”, but also a unique insight into some of the most important and the most groundbreaking musical moments in his entire career.

The creators of the box will take the listener from Presley’s early recordings made in Sam Phillips’ studio, through his absolutely brilliant sessions in the American Sound Studio in 1969 and stylistically diverse sessions in the famous Stax Studio, to the phenomenal concert in Memphis in 1974 (for during “How Great Thou Art” Elvis received a Grammy Award) and extremely personal – his last sessions in the Jungle Room at Graceland.

As many as eighty-eight (out of one hundred and eleven) songs included in the announced box set have been remastered and mixed by Grammy winner Matt Ross-Spang. All of them, as the publishers assure, are to be presented in the so-called basic version, without later overdubs – additional vocals or instrumental sections.

The publishing house, also available in the form of two vinyl records and in streaming, has been promoting for several days a short video in which the creators of the set talk about its creation and the song “Polk Salad Annie” from the concert at Mid South Coliseum in Memphis, which was also mixed for the needs of box.

It is worth adding here that the first comments regarding the presented concert piece have already appeared in various places. In addition to the overwhelmingly positive opinions, there are also often voices of concern that the choir vocals accompanying Elvis on stage have almost completely disappeared from the concert recording.

What will the final effect be? We will know the answer to this question in less than two months. However, it must be honestly admitted that the previous sets – “From Elvis In Nashville” and “Back In Nashville”, which, although strongly interfering and deviating from the original, historical sound, turned out to be a success and many fans still enjoy them to this day. And what will it be like this time?
