ELVIS RECORDS AT THE AMERICAN SOUND STUDIOS

Elvis has been doing virtually all of his recording work in Nashville or Hollywood since signing with RCA. Now, however, he records in Memphis again for the first time since 1955.

He performs all-night, marathon sessions at the American Sound Studio. His work here will be regarded as some of the musical highlights of his career, his best work since the groundbreaking days of Sun Records and the heady days at RCA before he went into the Army.

Elvis has excellent material to choose from and pours his heart and soul into the sessions. He works with a host of top-notch Memphis musicians. The sound is fresh and bold. On every track, you can sense his enthusiasm and creative energy. This is joyous work, after years of boredom in the movies.

Two albums will result from these sessions. The sessions also result in four singles to be released during 1969 and 1970: “In the Ghetto,” “Suspicious Minds,” “Don’t Cry Daddy” and “Kentucky Rain.” Between the two recording sessions, Elvis and his family spend Lisa’s first birthday in Aspen, Colorado.

ELVIS RECORDS IN MEMPHIS AGAIN AFTER 14 YEARS

By March 1969 Elvis returned to Hollywood to film and record the soundtrack for what would be his 31st film and the last in which he would play a dramatic role. This was “Change of Habit“, co-starring Mary Tyler Moore. Elvis plays a ghetto doctor from a northern Tennessee town. Mary Tyler Moore and two other nuns go “undercover” in the ghetto to help people with social and health problems in the community.

The subject matter, while serious and timely, is not particularly well handled by the writers in the opinion of many, and the title turns out to be frivolous. Elvis however does a superb job of being natural, which he finds refreshing after the nonsense he had to put up with in his films for most of the 1960s.

The few songs in the film are good and naturally done as well, rather than the usual poorly contrived situations of earlier films.

Charro” was released in theaters in March 1969 and did not make much of a splash at the box office.

In May 1969, Elvis, his family and friends took a vacation in Hawaii. At this time, the Circle G ranch was sold for $440,000.
