ELVIS NAMED ONE OF THE NATION’S TEN OUTSTANDING YOUNG MEN

Elvis is honored to be named one of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Nation by the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce (The Junior Chamber). He is nervous about his acceptance speech. He feels deeply moved and proud to receive this recognition. This national honor has been given every year since the late 1930s and recognizes young people who have made great achievements in their field of endeavor, illustrating the opportunities available in the business system. It also applauds humanitarian and community service. Scientists, inventors, artists, filmmakers, presidential-bound politicians, and men of greatness in every field have been selected for this award over the years. For Elvis, a man who grew up poor, and, in his early career, had received criticism about his work, this is one of his proudest moments. It is a sign that he has achieved acceptance, recognition, and respect for his work and for the kind of person he is.

THE COVER OF “LOOK MAGAZINE” ANNOUNCES THE FIRST OFFICIAL BIO OF ELVIS

In late January 1971, Elvis, as contractually stipulated, begins a month-long engagement at the International Hotel in Las Vegas. The performances are again good, on the same level as the August-September 1970 season. Elvis introduces minor changes to the repertoire such as the song How Great Thou Art or the show-ending song, “The Impossible Dream,” which this season replaces the traditional “Can’t Help Falling In Love.” After the engagements are over, in March Elvis begins a recording session in Nashville, but it is cancelled due to pain and inflammation in one eye. He is treated in a Nashville hospital, where he is diagnosed with a second glaucoma.

In May, Elvis appears on the cover of “Look Magazine,” which carries a brief account of the upcoming biography of Elvis by Jerry Hopkins. Many books and articles have been written in recent years, but this is the first time that a serious, in-depth biography has been done. The book, titled “Elvis: A Biography,” is due out in October. In May/June Elvis returns to Nashville for recording sessions that he had to cancel in March. Much of the work is for his upcoming album “Elvis Sings The Wonderful World Of Christmas,” the upcoming gospel album “He Touched Me,” and various singles to be released during that year such as “I’m Leavin'” and “It’s Only Love.”
