Released in October 1971, the LP “Elvis Sings The Wonderful World Of Christmas” was a new album of Christmas songs. After many reissues of the first album from 1957, RCA felt that Elvis needed new Christmas material to offer.
The recording sessions took place at Studio B in Nashville in May 1971, with a Christmas tree inside the studio to motivate Elvis to perform the songs as well as possible. The LP does not sound as “fresh” as the 1957 one but it is well executed. The overloaded production by Felton Jarvis did not help the songs which lost quality and freshness in favor of wind or string instruments.
However, three songs stand out above the rest: the magnificent Merry Christmas Baby, and the no less fantastic I’ll Be Home On Christmas Day and Holly Leaves And Christmas Trees.
The LP did not chart on Billboard (it did chart on the Christmas album charts) and initially sold over 400,000 copies in its first two years. Today, “Elvis Sings The Wonderful Of Christmas” is triple platinum, awarded by the RIAA.
