FIVE SLEEPY HEADS
Five Sleepy Heads was composed by Sid Tepper and Roy C. Bennett, who were already regular songwriters for Elvis. It was originally recorded by Ernestine Schumann-Heink in 1906.
This song is a version of the lullaby by German classical composer Johannes Brahms: “Wiegenlied” opus 49, no. 4. Brahms was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1833. The song was written in honor of the birth of the son of Brahms’ friends, Bertha and Artur Faber, in 1868.
Brahms in his youth had been in love with Bertha when she was a young visitor to his women’s choir in Hamburg. The romance with Bertha ended, but the friendship endured, and the melody was composed by Brahms for Bertha’s little baby.
Elvis not only sang us all kinds of musical genres, but he also sang to children and left us lullabies as sweet as this one.
It was recorded by Elvis on June 20/21, 1967 at the MGM Sound Stage in Hollywood, California and first released for the soundtrack of the film Speedway on May 26, 1968.
A delicious song that transmits an enormous sweetness, with a delicious and versatile Elvis voice, with that music box beginning, and prepares us for the Wizard of Dreams to come and find us to take us with him every night and watch over our dreams.
“FIVE SLEEPY HEADS”
“There were five sleepyheads
All tucked into their beds
While I sang a lullaby
One got dream dust in her eye
There were four sleepyheads
Playing possum with me
Mr. sandman came by
And then there were three
Moonbeams play peek-a-boo
Three awake became two
And my song was almost done
When the land of nod took one
Kissed the last one goodnight
Then I heard not a peep
There were five sleepy heads
Now they’re all fast asleep“
