On Monday, July 2, 1956, Elvis conducted one of the most iconic recording sessions of his career at RCA Studio 1 in New York. He recorded just three songs: “Hound Dog” in 31 takes and “Don’t Be Cruel,” which would be released five weeks later and become his biggest hit single. He also recorded the ballad, “Any Way You Want Me.”

Colonel Parker told RCA Vice President Larry Kananga that “Hound Dog” could become such a hit that RCA would have to change the company symbol from “Victor Dog” to “Hound Dog.”

After this day, Elvis would never enter a New York studio again.

The next day, July 3, 1956. On his way home, aboard the Southern Railway local train from New York to Memphis, Elvis, in his deepest privacy, would play the recordings of the RCA session on a portable record player, to review his recordings and to get an idea of ??how his fans would hear the songs.
