This single includes songs already recorded by the king of rock in 1968, specifically from mid-January of that year 68. At the beginning of the year, Elvis returned to Nashville to record new songs continuing with his efforts to resume his career as a singer and with the intention to gradually move away from his frustrated career in Hollywood. During these recording sessions, Elvis was in a very good mood and that is even reflected in the different takes that have been released over the years. With U.S. Male, Elvis returns to cover a Jerry Reed song that he had recorded just a few months before. In addition, the services of the country artist were once again used to play guitar on this song and on others from these same recording sessions. US Male reached position #28 in the US and #15 in the UK. The master was taken from take number twelve.
The B side, Stay Away, is clearly inspired by Greensleaves, a traditional Anglo-Saxon song that for the occasion had lyrics added by the tandem Tepper and Bennett. This song, which Elvis tried to approach in different ways (the one that finally appeared on the single and the slow and fast versions of takes one and three respectively), was finally included in the soundtrack of the film Stay Away, Joe (1968). ) despite the fact that it was recorded well after the film’s soundtrack recording sessions held in October 1967. The master take was taken from cut fifteen despite the fact that a guitar track performed by Jerry Reed would later be added . In the United States it reached position number sixty-seven. In addition to Jerry Reed, in these recording sessions, Elvis had the invaluable collaboration of musicians such as Scotty Moore and Chip Young on guitars, Bob Moore on bass, Murrey “Buddy” Harman and D.J. Fontana on drums, Floyd Cramer on piano, Charlie McCoy on harmonica, Peter Drake on steel guitar The Jordanaires on vocal accompaniment.
