NEW RECORDINGS AND THE TV SPECIAL WITH FRANK SINATRA

STUCK ON YOU WOULD BE ELVIS’ FIRST Nº1 OF THE 60’S

Elvis has his first recording session after Army on March 20, 1960. RCA is eager for its star to record again after more than a year without doing so. Some of the recordings are for the album “Elvis is Back!”, which reached number 2 on the Billboard pop charts as well as the recording of the single “Stuck On You/Fame And Fortune”, which due to emergencies (there were more of a million pre-orders) once recorded, it is rushed to the pressing plants and is packaged in a generic sleeve without waiting for orders. Debuting at #84, in just three weeks it reached number 1. The sessions would continue in early April.

On March 26, 1960, Elvis recorded in Miami a special titled “Welcome Home, Elvis,” a special edition of the Frank Sinatra show ABC-TV variety program, for which he was paid $125,000, a record sum for an appearance on a variety show up to that point. Elvis performs his new single, and will sing along with Frank Sinatra a medley of the songs “Withcraft and Love Me Tender.”

RETURN TO FILMING, THE RECORDING OF GIBLUES

After a new recording session in Nashville, Elvis traveled to Los Angeles where on April 21, 1960 he began filming and recording his first film after Army, his fifth film, under the name “GI Blues“, and for Paramount Pictures. This is the third of nine Elvis films produced (non-consecutive) by Hal B.Wallis. “GI Blues” co-stars dancer and actress Juliet Prowse.

ABC broadcast the May 12, 1960 “Welcome Home, Elvis, Frank Sinatra” special edition of its variety show, which attracts a 41.5% share of the national television audience.

On July 3, 1960, Vernon Presley married a divorced woman and mother of three children, Davada (Dee) Stanley, an American whom he met in Germany, where she had been living with her military husband. They live at Graceland briefly, then move to a nearby house.

On July 21, 1960, Elvis received his black belt in karate, an interest he developed while doing military service. Elvis will carry the certificate in his wallet until his death.
