Published in November 1970, “That’s The Way It Is” served as the driving vehicle (all and not really a soundtrack) for the documentary that Elvis had recently made for MGM (and released that same month of November) that chronicled the preparation and subsequent performances during the August 1970 season at the International Hotel in Las Vegas, from that year on known as the “Elvis Summer Festival”. It is not a soundtrack, since only four songs appear live from those performances and no previous rehearsals that appear in the film were edited either. On the other hand, the LP contains 8 songs recorded in Nashville at Studio B in June of that same year.
All in all, we are faced with an album that perhaps could have been more uniform, but that offers us an Elvis in a state of maturity with songs of the most important of the 70’s such as Just Pretend, Bridge Over Troubled Water, I’ve Lost You or You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me.
The album reached number 21 on the Billboard charts and initially achieved sales of 500,000 copies, earning it the gold record awarded by the RIAA.
