FILMING CONTINUES: HARUM SCARUM – FRANKY AND JOHNNY

On January 8, 1965, Elvis celebrated his 30th birthday. Elvis continues his film career full time. He practically no longer makes recordings for albums that are not related to his films. On March 9, 1965, Elvis recorded the soundtrack and began filming his 19th film, “Harum Scarum“, which co-stars Mary Ann Mobley. “Girl Happy” debuted on April 7, 1965, becoming the #25 highest-grossing film of the year. The soundtrack ranked #8, while the single “Crying in the Chapel” was rescued from the album sessions.

His Hand In Mine from 1960 surprisingly reaches number #3 on the Billboard charts. What was initially a song intended for the Easter season, became a hit on both sides of the Atlantic, returning Elvis to the charts.

The film “Harum Scarum” was officially released on April 19, 1965. In May, Elvis began recording the soundtrack and filming “Frankie and Johnny“, co-starring Donna Douglas. On May 9, 1965, Colonel Parker has organized a radio special to commemorate Mother’s Day that will be broadcast on radio stations throughout the country.

IT WAS DECIDED AS A ADVERTISING INSTRUMENT FOR THE FILM “TICKLE ME” TO USE ELVIS’ CADILLAC

To promote the movie Tickle Me, Col. Tom Paker convinces RCA to acquire Elvis’ 1960 Cadillac with gold details inside. The song, “Such And Easy Question” from the 1962 sessions and released on the LP of that same year, Pot Luck, reached #11 on the charts. It was decided to publish already edited material instead of recording new songs in line with the new times that are running.

On June 24, 1965, Elvis makes a donation of $50,000 to the Motion Picture Relief Found, apparently the organization’s largest donation received to date. The acceptance of the organization was carried out by Barbara Stanwyck and Frank Sinatra.

Tickle Me” opens nationally on July 7, 1965. Although the film does not reach the top box office, it quickly recovers production costs (which at the time had been reduced to a minimum) and saves Allied Artists of financial ruin. Despite the low quality of Elvis’ latest films, his popularity does not decrease, managing to remain one of the highest-grossing actors.
