Information

It’s Only Love / The Sound Of Your Cry was released in September 1971. It was again a single with two songs from different sessions and years of recording.

It’s Only Love was a recent composition, written by the well-known composer Mark James (Suspicious Minds) together with Steve Tyrell. It had been relatively successful with the help of BJ Thomas, and once it reached Elvis’ hands, he decided to record it.

The recording took place in Studio B in Nashville in May 1971. It is a great composition, and Elvis achieved a great result, despite having problems in the recording (a piece of the original lyrics had to be deleted, due to Elvis having problems with the pronunciation).

The B-side, The Sound Of Your Cry, was a composition by the trio Bill Giant, Bernie Baum and Florence Kaye, who had composed numerous songs for their soundtracks in the 60’s, but were also responsible for some great songs such as Power Of My Love, Devil In Disguise or Ask Me.

By June 1970, Elvis recorded this composition, which was in some way in the context of You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me, that is, a perfect song for Elvis’ voice and style of interpretation that he once again gave himself to. It is advisable to listen to the different takes, to appreciate the work that Elvis does.

It was not a bad single, but where was the problem? The subsequent arrangements to which these two songs were subjected, took away shine and freshness from the songs that once again lost strength. Also, by that time, less and less publicity was made for Elvis’ releases, which made it difficult to get a good diffusion.

Commercially, the single reached position 51 on the Billboard charts, with alarming sales of 150,000 copies.
