ELVIS IS BACK

By Alfredo Ayul

On April 8, 1960, RCA released “Elvis is Back,” a blues LP infused with jazz and rock n roll with a couple of ballads. In both stereo and mono versions, the album reached number two on the Billboard Top LPs and topped the UK album chart.

Despite this, its commercial performance was a disappointment, with fewer than 300,000 copies sold in the United States; it was outsold by the G.I. Blues soundtrack that Elvis had not wanted to release (the G.I. Blues soundtrack was nominated for two Grammys).

A gatefold sleeve for the LP offered fans an Army Elvis photo album. Initially, the release received mixed reviews, but in the following years its critical reception became progressively more positive.

Writing for Rough Guides in 2004, Paul Simpson commented: “Among the 1,800 or so records in Elvis’s Graceland collection is a copy of Elvis Is Back!, almost completely worn out from the amount of times it was surely played. You can understand why this would be perhaps his favourite album.” This is basic information, and from a variety of sources.

In another report I will give my personal opinion with data on its releases and versions.
