Released in February 1972, the single He Touched Me / Bosom Of Abraham was the prelude to Elvis’ new gospel LP for 1972 and which would earn him his second Grammy Award. The songs came from the marathon recording sessions in March/June 1971 at Studio B in Nashville.
Just as with the recording for the Christmas LP Elvis had to find the strength to do a good job, for the gospel songs, the desire to do a serious and committed job emerged again.
He Touched Me was an old song by the famous gospel composer Willian J. Gaither. Elvis, as with the entire album He Touched Me, transformed the song into a more contemporary gospel style. Elvis sounds perfect and in perfect harmony with the Imperials. The song builds up to the apotheotic ending.
For the B-side, he again transformed the well-known song Bosom Of Abraham to a faster and more modern tempo. The association of the gospel genre with Elvis always worked. Despite being two great songs, this single did not enter the Billboard charts, and sales did not reach 100,000 copies.
