INFORMATION
Released in April 1964, the Kissin’ Cousins ??LP was a new soundtrack, this time from a Metro Goldwyn-Mayer film. By mid-1963 Elvis’s entire recording career was tied to his film contracts and consequently his popularity. It began to decline, while new groups broke into the music scene with force. In fact, when this LP appeared, the Beatles had landed in the US for a short time to make their first television appearances and concerts.
Kissin’ Cousins ??was a low-quality LP, all of which and being recorded in Nashville (Elvis provided the vocals, later in Hollywood) did not have material with a sufficient level to compete with the music that was beginning to be made at that time. Obviously there are some songs that deserve our attention (Tender Feeling, Anyone, or the two bonus tracks recorded in Nashville in 1963) but in global terms they were not up to the material that Elvis could deserve.
Times were evolving and composers did not want to give their original songs and giving up practically all their rights, which meant that the demos that reached Elvis’ hands were of dubious quality. Consequently the album did not achieve significant sales and reached number 6 on the Billboard charts.
