(1968 – 1970)

ELVIS RECORDS IN MEMPHIS AGAIN AFTER 14 YEARS

In March 1969, Elvis returned to Hollywood to film and record the music for the soundtrack of what would be his 31st film and which would be the last time he played a dramatic role.

This is “Change of Habit“, co-starring Mary Tyler Moore. Elvis plays a doctor from a ghetto in a northern city, hailing from Tennessee. Mary Tyler Moore and two other nuns who go “undercover” in the ghetto to help people with health and social problems in the community. The theme, while earnest and timely, is not particularly well carried out by the writers in the opinion of many, and the title turns out to be frivolous. Elvis however performs a magnificent role showing naturalness, which is refreshing to him after the crap he had to put up with in his movies for most of the ’60s.

The few songs in the movie are good and done naturally too, instead of the usual misconception from previous movies.

Charro” opens in theaters in March 1969 and does not make much “buzz” at the box office.

In May 1969 Elvis, his family and his friends take a vacation to Hawaii. Around these dates, the Circle G ranch is being sold for $440,000
