NEW RELATIONSHIPS: ELVIS & LINDA THOMPSON
On July 26, the separation of Elvis and Priscilla is formalized. Divorce is coming. Elvis has begun seeing Linda Thompson, a young woman from Memphis, whom he has recently been introduced to and with whom he quickly hits it off. Linda Thompson will become his main companion until the end of 1976. At the end of July 1972, Elvis begins preparations for a new season at the Las Vegas Hilton. The “Summer Festival” will begin on August 4, 1972. Again the reviews of this season in Las Vegas are very good, with a very good-looking Elvis who performs very professional shows. The repertoire is perhaps the most complete of all his seasons and Elvis’s voice is better than ever. Fans from around the world come together this season.
On September 4, 1972, Elvis participates in a press conference between dinner shows and midnight in Las Vegas, announcing plans for a television concert to be broadcast worldwide via satellite from Hawaii. The show is expected to reach the largest audience in television history and the live album is expected to be a huge hit.
In October 1972, Elvis reached number #2 on the Billboard singles chart with the single “Burning Love / It’s A Matter Of Time”, one of his greatest achievements in recent years. Dennis Linde’s composition allows Elvis (all of which and he didn’t really want to record it at the time) to return to making a good Rock song that is very well received.
