Elvis and his friend Nick Adams visited Elvis’s former teacher, Mildred Scrivener.
Mrs. Scrivener was Elvis’ senior teacher at Humes High School in Memphis, and responsible for enrolling Elvis in Humes’ annual “Minstrel” show, which took place on April 9, 1953.
Mildred Scrivener: “…for our variety show in their last year of 1953, we had thirty numbers and there was no time for individual encores, so I told them that whoever got the most applause could do the encore.
I will never forget the look on Elvis’ face when he received it. His face lit up and he said to me:
‘…Miss Scrivener, did you really like it that much?’
In 1955, Elvis stopped by the day before the Christmas holidays began to bring me a gift; The kids were around him, asking for autographs, and I was ready to get in line with them.
Elvis, when he saw me, shouted, ‘…here’s Miss Scrivener’ and came out of the crowd to speak. “We think a lot about him and we are happy that he also cares so much about us.”
