Released in June 1971, “Love Letters From Elvis” seemed at first glance to be an album that had to contain only love songs, given the title of the LP. Unfortunately, it was not so. This LP represents in a way the beginning of a way of doing things regarding the releases of Elvis’ 70s LPs.
We are faced with a collection of songs from the recording sessions that took place in June 1970 at Studio B in Nashville. There are songs that deserve our attention and others that are perhaps more forgettable, but the common denominator is the poor production. The songs are not worked on and contain arrangements that in certain cases make them lose all the freshness they had, as in the case of If I Were You, Got My Mojo Working / Keep Your Hands Off Of It, or I’ll Never Know. These facts had already drawn attention the previous year in the LPs released: interesting songs that lost much of their essence due to poor arrangements but which as a whole could be ignored. This is a constant on this LP. Failure to take care of these details would lead to a short-term decline in sales of new Elvis material.
The album reached number 33 on the Billboard charts and sales did not exceed 300,000 copies. It was the worst-selling RCA LP (not counting the Camden label) since 1968, after the Comeback Special.
